Title
WMID-C001C1: Medieval: Incomplete single loop buckle with integral box chape
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy single looped buckle with an integral box chape, of Medieval dating (c. AD 1400 to c. AD 1500).

Approximately 25% of the buckle is present, with part of the loop and chape present. The rest of the loop, the pin and the chape are missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The buckle is irregular in plan and rectangular in section.

The loop is incomplete and it is hard to determine whether it was originally lyre shaped or oval. The curvature of the surviving loop fragment is more suggestive of an oval shaped frame as opposed to lyre shape. A single integrally cast sub circular hole is present, and would have originally held the pin, which is now missing. A vertical ridge is located at the base of the loop / frame, at the start of the box chape or open end. The reverse of the box chape is hollow, with the back plate missing.

The buckle measures 29.56 mm in length, 38.69 mm wide and 4.05 mm thick. It weighs 10.9 grams.

The buckle is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail. This has the result that any any original decoration is hard to identify.

Similar single looped buckles with integral box chapes have been recorded on the PAS database as LVPL-7168B4, SUSS-93CAB2 and GLO-DB16A8. Whitehead (1996, 38) has published a similar example as no. 223 on page 38 and has dated it to the Medieval period, between c. AD 1400 and AD 1500.
