WMID-9C7F85. Roman Polden Hill brooch (front, profile, reverse)
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy Polden Hill brooch. Roman period, c. AD 75-175. Mass: 7.9g; length: 46.5mm; width: 21.7mm; depth: 14mm. T-shaped in plan with a rearward facing hook on the head. The side-wings are semi-cylindrical with incomplete pierced end-caps. The spring, pin and external chord are missing. There are moulded plates on the side of the head. A median ridge runs down the front of the bow from the hook on the head. There are grooves at the ends of the side wings. The bow is arched in profile and tapers to the rounded foot. There is an incomplete catchplate and web on the lower portion of the reverse of the bow. There are finishing marks evident on the catchplate. The brooch is in very good condition overall, with a white metal coating.
