Title
WMID-92F942: Roman: Enamelled Trumpet brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy Trumpet style brooch, of Roman (75 to 175 AD) dating.

Approximately 75% of the brooch is present, with the head, bow, foot, spring and catch plate present. The pin is missing, presumed lost in antiquity.

The head of the brooch is oval in plan, and tapers into the bow. The reverse of the head is flat, with a integrally cast rectangular lug. The spring is present coiled through the lug on the back of the bow. Iron corrosion products present obscure the spring details to determine if an internal or external chord is present. A small vertical knop is present at the top of the bow, this may be the remnants of a head loop. The bow of the brooch is D shaped in cross section. The head of the brooch tapers into the body. The head has been decorated with a series of recessed cells, some still containing enamel. The pattern consists of four ovoid (egg or petal shaped) cells, with the points facing each other in the centre. Two of these retain blue enamel, two retain orange enamel. An irregular recessed area surrounds the outside of these ovoid or petal shaped cells.

Halfway down the length of the bow, is an arcanthus type moulding. Beneath the moulding, the lower part of the bow extends and tapers slightly. The front of the bow is faceted into two sides with a central ridge. Either side of the central ridge, below the arcanthus moulding, are some triangular recesses for enamel. No enamel remains. The bow terminates in a foot knop, which is incomplete, but has a sub circular collar above it.

The catch plate starts beneath the moulding on the back of the brooch and is sub triangular in shape. It is incomplete, missing the external edge, which formed the pin rest.

The brooch measures 57.05 mm in length, 18.26 mm wide and 25.86 mm thick. It weighs 16.8 grams.

The brooch is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of the original surface in place and removal of some of the decorative detail.

Trumpet style brooches typically date from 75 to 175 AD.
