Title
WMID-7CB3B8: Modern: Victorian mourning brooch
Description
English: An incomplete hand made jet mourning brooch, of Victorian dating (c. AD 1880 - c. AD 1910).

The brooch is oval in plan. The front exhibits carved decoration. In the centre is a plain upright oval. Surrounding this is a greek key design. The edge of the brooch consists of a twisted rope style border. The back is plain and consists of a copper alloy back plate. The pin is incomplete and consists of part of the hinge and a small amount of the catch plate.

This brooch has probably been made from Whitby Jet as that was the main source of Jet during the Victorian period.

The brooch measures 44.89 mm in length, 34.06 mm wide and 9.54 mm thick. It weighs 8.7 grams.

Mourning jewellery was popular during the Late Victorian period, due to Queen Victoria staying in mourning following the death of her husband, Prince Albert.
