Title |
WMID-7713C5. Roman pendant (possibly). |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper-alloy object, possibly a pendant from the Roman period. The object consists of a broken thin sectioned ?loop adjoining a tapering shaft formed of alternating, circular sectioned ribs and ovoids. Mass: 11.8g; length: 53.2; extant width: 10.0mm; diameter (top rib): 7.8mm. The object has a green patina to which a lacquer has been applied.
The object is similar to find LIN-C83398 from Broadhome in Lincolnshire. This has two opposing horse heads at the top with a circular suspension loop between. Possible functions as a pendant or wick threader if the object was attached to a lamp are suggested. In record LIN-C83398 it is noted that another similar example was published in the March 2006 edition of “The Searcher” magazine. This example is 48mm in length and has two small opposing horseheads either side of a loop at the top. The circular sectioned shank tapers to a pointed foot and is reeled the entire length. It was described as a stylus. Further parallels are recorded in record LIN-C83398 (PAS reference BH-E44A46 from Milton Keynes; SMR reference NLM02408 from North Lincolnshire; and another from Hampshire (Sally Worrell pers. com). I am grateful to Finds Liaison Officers Adam Daubney and Rob Collins for their assistance in recording this object. |
