Title
WMID-60CA34. Post-medieval buckle.
Description
English: Incomplete cast copper-alloy double looped buckle frame, with a suspension loop. Post-medieval, c. 16th-17th century. Mass: 5.2g; length: 35.9mm; width: 25.1mm; depth: 11.2mm; internal diameter of loop: 4.6mm. The object consists of much of one side of the frame (which turns through 90 degrees at one of the broken ends), together with an integral loop and the incomplete axis bar. The axis bar is variable in section, but generally sub-D shaped. The extant side of the frame is slightly angled and sub-rectangular in plan. Green/brown surface to which a lacquer has been applied. Similar buckles and fragments have been recorded on the PAS database (e.g. CAM-86A5C7 from Weston Colville, Cambridgeshire, BH-9D46C2 from Sheering, Essex). Whitehead (1996: 72) also illustrates several similar buckles, suggesting that their function was to suspend a sword from a belt (16th to early 17th century).
