Title
WMID-2B9FA1. Medieval buckle (front, reverse).
Description
English: Copper-alloy buckle. Medieval, 12th-14th century. Cast, oval frame with off-set bar, ornate outside edge, pin, and plate. Mass (total): 9.2g; frame: 20.5mm(w) x 9.0mm(l); plate: 48.7mm(w) x12.2mm(l). The outside edge of the frame consists of two knops, with a pin-rest and grooved decoration on the front. The sub-rectangular plate is made of folded copper-alloy sheet which tapers slightly on the reverse, and flares out slightly on the front. The plate is recessed for the buckle frame and there is a slot for the pin. The front of the plate is decorated with engraved zigzags along the sides and inside edge. There are four rivets through the plate, two at each end, transverse to the orientation of the plate. The rivets have flared, circular sectioned heads protruding from the front of the plate. There are grooves on the tops of the heads. There is also a central circular hole through the centre of both sides of the plate. The buckle has a well-developed green patina. Finds suggest that oval frames with ornate outside edges, and plates were a long-lasting fashion, in use in London from the late 12th century to the late 14th century ("Dress Accessories 1150-1450", Egan and Pritchard, 2002, p ibid. p. 76). This is the date range suggested for the buckle recorded here.
