Description

The Old Church of St. Jeroen.

De Grote of Sint-Jeroenskerk is een gotische kerk in Noordwijk-Binnen, genoemd naar de martelaar Jeroen. Hij zou de eerste pastoor van Noordwijk genoemd kunnen worden. Door de Noormannen werd hij in het jaar 856 onthoofd. Zijn hoofd zou volgens de overlevering nog ergens in de kerk begraven liggen, maar niemand weet waar.

De kerk wordt gebruikt door de protestantse gemeente.

De oudste delen van de kerk dateren uit de 13e eeuw. Hiertoe behoort ook het grootste deel van de toren, die romanogotische details vertoont. Na de stadsbrand van 1450 werd de kerk herbouwd. Dankzij inkomsten uit de bedevaart die sinds 1429 werd gehouden kon een grote kruiskerk worden gebouwd.
