Sólo unas pocas pilas conservadas en España están fechadas, la mayor parte de la arquitectura románica rural española, han de ubicarse entre finales del siglo XII y todo el XIII La rudeza de muchas de ellas en el ámbito aldeano no debe interpretarse como signo de antigüedad sino más bien al contrario, como arcaización y popularización progresiva Para datar una pila, se considera el diámetro ( tamaño de la copa), a mayor diametro se sabe que tiene mayor antigüedad, pues la forma de bautizar a ido cambiando...... de bautizar adultos se pasó a bautizar niños y luego bebés y por tanto, el tamaño de las pilas bautismales se fue ajustando. Aunque de forma exterior diversa, interiormente siempre son esfericas Tanto el tamaño como la altura están directamente relacionados con el bautizado y el tipo de rito Las pilas eran de gran diámetro y bajas para facilitar el acceso a los adultos Las pilas profundas corresponde al bautizo de niños que podían rondar hasta el año de edad Las pilas menos profundas está reservada para los bebés que son sumergidos en brazos del adulto que lo sostiene. Estas pilas destinadas a bautizar bebés son las que suelen tener pie además de la “bañera” (copa) Una pila grande apunta al bautismo de los adultos propio de conversos, en los primeros tiempos y hasta bien entrada la Edad Media ya que todavía había conversiones de otras religiones al cristianismo. Cuando la mayoría de los bautismos eran de infantes, las pilas evolucionan (alrededor del s. VIII); reducen su tamaño aunque mantienen la profundidad para sumergir verticalmente a niños que generalmente rondaban la edad de un año y que se sostenían de pie. Entorno al s. XI se produce una nueva modificación debido a la gran mortalidad infantil que obliga a bautizar en los días próximos al alumbramiento. El bebé no se sostiene de pie y la inmersión se produce de forma horizontal. Las pilas deben aumentar su perímetro y se elevan para facilitar la labor del sacerdote. En el simbolismo tradicional, toda pila bautismal representa la identificación con la Fuente de la Vida del Paraiso", pues en algunas pilas extranjeras hay inscripciones en ellas que dicen "Esta es la Fuente de la Vida que purifica el Mundo". El lugar en donde se colocaba la pila bautismal ha variado a través del tiempo , lo normal era encontrarlas situadas en el sotocoro, a los pies de la iglesia, en un departamento diferenciado que se solía cerrar
