Description

Louis XIII
(b.1601, reigned 1610-1643)
By Hubert le Sueur (active 1602-1658)
French, Paris, about 1615-20
Bronze

This is a pendant to the bronze of Louis XIII's father, Henry IV, shown nearby in the gallery. The portrait appears to show Louis at about 15 to 20 years old. The horse and rider are closely related to the equestrian statue of King Charles I by Le Sueur (1633), which supplanted the (Queen) Eleanor Cross very tall stone shrine at Charing Cross, the roundabout immediately south of Trafalgar Square, and another small bronze statuette of Louis XIII on horseback in the Museum. The type is based on the monument to Cosimo I de Medici in Florence by Giambologna, which influenced several others made by his workshop for the crowned heads of Europe, including one of Henry IV (destroyed in the French revolution).
