Description

Archaeopteryx
(Jurassic, Solnhofen limestone, Germany)

The most famous fossil from Solnhofen is Archaeopteryx, long thought to be the first bird. With features of both birds and reptiles, Archaeopteryx seems to be the missing link between these two groups of vertebrae.

Avian features include wings and feathers, which can be seen as imprints in the rock, and a reversed first toe (hallux.)

Primitive reptilian features include presence of teeth, a long bony tail, and fingers in the front edge of the wing.
