De schapenscheerster (naar Millet), 1889 The sheep shearer (after Millet)

This is one of the ten scenes of farm life that Van Gogh painted in 1889 after prints of Adrien Laveille, which in turn were based on original paitings by Jean-Francois Millet (three other works in the series are on display to the left). Van Gogh's painting makes it clear how different and original a copy (by way of a black-and-white print) van be; to the right of this sheepshearer is a version by Millet himself.
