DescriptionWLANL - 23dingenvoormusea - Marmeren Romeinse sarcofaag, detail.jpg |
Nederlands: Marmeren Romeinse sarcofaag. APM 10.854. Ca 260-280 n. Chr.
Rond 100 n. Marmeren Romeinse sarcofaag, detailEnglish: Marble Roman sarcophagus. APM 10.854. Ca. 260-280 AD
Around 100 AD, the Romans no longer cremated the dead but placed them in marble sarcophagi. The sarcophagi were often decorated with mythological scenes. In this case, the god Dionysus is central. In his entourage we see the female followers of the god of wine playing music and sacrificing a goat. Marble Roman sarcophagus, detail |
