Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The W. W. Sloan House, 869 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, December 2019. Built in 1888 in a hybrid Queen Anne and Tudor style from a design by architect H.H. Little, the trio of bargeboarded gables and half-timbered stucco façade on the third floor attests to the latter style, while the asymmetrical orientation of the first-floor façade and (especially) the ample porch framed by Ionic columns is representative of the former. Born in Ireland, William Wilson Sloan (1831-1901) came to Buffalo at the age of seventeen and quickly built himself up in the city's business community, first investing in the water-powered mills of the Hydraulics area and then in the incipient electric light and power business, becoming a vice-president and treasurer of the Buffalo General Electric Company. He was also active in the brewing industry, owning a malt house on Carroll Street.
