Contemporary Biographies, by W.T. Pike, including "Kent at the opening of the Twentieth Century". (Pike's New Century Series no.10). Published in 1904 by W.T. Pike & Co., 19 Grand Parade, Brighton. The volumes in this series each contain an illustrated section about the county, followed by a long list of short biographies (each with a photographic portrait) of men of the county who were alive at the time of publication (plus a few who had recently died). Each volume has an index to the illustrations of buildings and views of the county, and an index to the biographies. Showing Birdsisle House, having been converted around 1897 by Joseph Robert Diggle J.P., and re-named St Michael's Grange. It was purchased by headmaster H.F. Varley during World War I, and became Asheton Grange School, for boys aged 8 to 18. The school closed in 1930. It became a rehabilitation home for unemployed men, then a home for children with special needs. The building was destroyed by a German bomb in 1940, and a smaller building now stands in its place. |
