The corvettes 'Astrolabe' and 'Zelee' are shown on the icy waters of the Antarctic, being hauled through the ice. Some of the crew members of the vessel depicted in the foreground are on the shore.

Inscribed: "LES COURVETTES SE HALANT DANS LES GLACES DE LA BANQUISE 6 FEVRIER 1838 (Parages Antarctiques)" and above "VOYAGE AU POLE SUD ET DANS L'OCEANIE. ATLAS PITTORESQUE, Pl 22".
