Deutsch: SOFIA wird in Kürze den Himmel über Neuseeland beobachten. Damit das Instrument GREAT (German Receiver for Astronomy at Terahertz Frequencies) im vorgesehenen Infrarotbereich beobachten kann, muss der Sensor heruntergekühlt werden. Dies geschieht mit Hilfe von flüssigem Stickstoff und Helium. Das mit Hilfe von speziellen Pumpen (am Fuß des Instruments zu sehen) erzeugte Vakuum sorgt dafür, dass die Gase nicht entweichen können.
SOFIA will soon start to observe the sky above New Zealand. For GREAT (German Receiver for Astronomy at Terahertz Frequencies) to observe in the infrared range, the sensor must be cooled. This is done with the help of liquid nitrogen and helium. Special pumps (seen at the bottom of the instrument) generate a vacuum that ensures that the gases cannot escape. |
