Volcaniclastic sandstone in the Precambrian of Minnesota, USA. (geology hammer for scale) The Lake Vermilion Formation is a Precambrian stratigraphic unit in northeastern Minnesota. It consists of low-grade metamorphosed volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks that were deposited in a marine environment. The outcrop shown above consists of volcaniclastic sandstone. The sediment grains are volcanic in origin, formed during explosive eruptions in the Late Archean and deposited in an oceanic setting. The sand-sized grains are composed of quartz, plagioclase feldspar, and dacite rock fragments (Ojakangas & Matsch, 1982). Stratigraphy: Lake Vermilion Formation, Neoarchean, 2.695-2.722 Ga Locality: roadcut on the northern side of Rt. 169, west of milepost 262 & east of milepost 261, between Glenmere Drive and West Two Road, west-southwest of the town of Tower & east-northeast of the town of Peyla, north-central St. Louis County, northeastern Minnesota, USA (47° 47’ 49.53” North latitude, 92° 19’ 00.57” West longitude) Reference cited: Ojakangas & Matsch (1982) - Minnesota’s Geology.
