Der Große Kranichsee ist Teil des SPA-Gebietes (Vogelschutzgebietes) „Westerzgebirge“ und Kernstück des Natura 2000-Schutzgebietes „Erzgebirgskamm am Großen Kranichsee“. Hier in einer Darstellung des Bundesamts für Naturschutz, in Rot das Vogelschutz- und in Gelb (bei der Darstellung beider Gebiete weitgehend überlagert vom Rot des Vogelschutzgebietes) das FFH-Gebiet.
