Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The vintage neon sign on the side of Voelker's Bowling Center, at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Amherst Street in Buffalo, New York, as seen on a pleasant May 2021 evening. The business has a quite colorful history: founded in 1896 by James C. Voelker as a roadside tavern on what was then the outskirts of town, the business continued in operation through Prohibition as an illegal speakeasy and was repeatedly shut down by federal agents, a standoff that escalated in 1926 when Voelker was brought up on murder charges after several patrons of the establishment were poisoned by doctored booze; the trial was followed nationwide and ended in a five-year sentence on reduced charges. The bowling alley, along with the neon sign here, was added in 1941 on what was previously the site of the Elmwood Hotel, which had earlier accommodated visitors to the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. The neon sign is animated such that the bowling ball "rolls" from right to left and "knocks down" the pins at the end. The bowling alley has remained closed since the onset of COVID-19 and is rumored to be demolished in the near future; indeed, this neon sign was dismantled in September 2021, four months after this photo was taken.
