LA LÉGENDE DE SAINTE URSULE Nous ne pouvons discuter ici cette hypothèse, qui attend la con-firmation des documents. Ce qui nous importe seulement, cest din-diquer la grande ressemblance qui existe entre lœuvre de Carpaccioet celle de son prédécesseur, ressemblance qui nous amène à croireque Carpaccio dut connaître les fresqves de Sainte-Marguerite.Il est vrai que Carpaccio, quand il peignit, en 1515, pour léglisede Saint-François à Trévise, la Rencontre de sainte Anne et desaint Joachim (aujourdhui à lAcadémie de Venise), avait déjàdepuis plusieurs années achevé le cycle de lEcole de Sainte-Ursule, mais il nest pas illogique de supposer que ses relationsavec Trévise sont beaucoup plus anciennes. Le fait est que nonseulement les deux cycles représentent les mêmes sujets, mais dansles détails, et notamment dans la scène du martyre, les ressem-blances sont si précises quon ne peut les croire accidentelles.Cest ainsi que chez les deux peintres lambassadeur présen
