Dans le tableau de Carpaccio, lambassadeur Michiel se tournedun air fourbe, et en montrant dun geste le cortège papal, versune modeste figure de prélat, vêtu de lhabit violet de monsignor,qui se tient au premier plan du tableau dans un coin. Sans doute,cest encore un Vénitien. Mais qui est-ce exactement? Parmi les prélats vénitiens qui étaient à Rome à cette époque,le plus important par sa situation et par son talent était, au diredes contemporains, François Arzentin. Né à Venise dun pèreallemand et dune mère vénitienne, il avait montré dès sa jeunesseune intelligence si vive et si pénétrante que le sénateur JeanMocenigo, avant de devenir doge en 1475, lavait pris commesecrétaire. Plus tard, Arzentin, qui était entré dans la carrièreecclésiastique, obtint lévêché de Concordia et se rendit à Rome ( 144 )
