Vitrophyres in the Tertiary of Colorado, USA. Rocky Mountains National Park (misnamed “Rocky Mountain National Park” by the American federal government) is part of Colorado's Front Range. The mountains in this area are part of the true Rocky Mountains (not all mts. in western North America are the “Rockies”). The American Rockies are subdivided into three physiographic provinces. This park is part of the Southern Rocky Mountains Physiographic Province, which has mountain ranges cored by Precambrian-aged igneous and metamorphic rocks. The escarpment shown above is called Lava Cliffs. The rocks here are quite young, compared with the majority of rocks in the park. The rocks are Oligocene-aged volcanics. The literature describes this material as rhyolitic welded tuff. The rocks are actually vitrophyres - black, glassy-textured, extrusive igneous rocks with embedded crystals (phenocrysts). This material originated as volcanic ash that was deposited and self-lithified ("welded") from the heat of the ash. Sufficient heat energy was present to re-melt most of the material, resulting in black glass. Geologic unit: Braddock Peak Volcanic Complex, Upper Oligocene, 27.7 Ma Locality: Lava Cliffs, northern side of Trail Ridge Road (Route 34), northwestern Rocky Mountains National Park, northern Colorado, USA |
