Summary

[edit]
Description
English: From early neolithic roots around 5,500 BC, it developed into one of the world's early urban areas named Rabbath-Ammon by about 3,300 BC. In 323, Alexander of Macedon (Alexander the Great) came and conquered, as he did all the known world. After Alexander's death, the city was renamed Philadelphia, after Ptolemy Philadelphius, one of Alexander's generals. It kept that name through the Nabatean period (312 BC to 106 AD), the Roman period that followed and even the Byzantine period that ended in with the battle of Fahl in 635 AD. After that, the Umayyad dynasty called the city Amman, a slight change in pronunciation on its ancient name. That name stuck through the Abbasid, Fatimid, Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman periods -- right to today. I labeled this photo "Visiting Amman" because it is of some of the ruins from the Roman period when that was the city's name. 7,500 years of history makes everything in the USA seem like the proverbial blink of an eye.
