Summary
[edit]DescriptionVisit to Technion No 12 (6429997601).jpg | On his first visit to Haifa, Ambassador Shapiro visited the Technion, where he was welcomed by Technion President Prof. Peretz Lavie, and Brig. Gen. (ret.) Hedva Almog, Deputy Mayor of Haifa. He met and congratulated Nobel Laureate Distinguished Professor Dan Shechtman, the Technion’s third Nobel laureate and sole winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of quasicrystals, a new form of matter. Prof. Shechtman described his groundbreaking discovery of quasiperiodic crystals in April 1982, while he was a visiting scholar in the U.S., at the National Bureau of Standards in Maryland, and will travel next week to Stockholm to receive his prize. Ambassador Shapiro also held a town hall meeting with Technion students, responding to questions about regional security, the US-Israel relationship, and opportunities for study in the U.S. Finally, he visited the Technion’s Titan Micoscope, one of the world’s highest resolution microscopes. |
