Summary
[edit]DescriptionVisayan talibong rattan ferrule 1.jpg |
English: This antique Filipino sword (probably early-1900s) is Visayan as evidenced by, (a) the absence of a peened tang, (b) the chisel-ground blade, and (c) the wooden scabbard (Luzon scabbards, except for Cordilleran ones, are almost always made of leather).
The styling of the scabbard further points to an eastern Visayas or central Visayas origin of the bolo. In the Visayan dialect, this bolo is commonly called a talibong or talebong (either way, pronounced as tah-LEE-bong, with the 'bong' as in gong). The hilt is made of hardwood, and the ferrule is made of weaved rattan. Overall length: 535 mm (21.1 inches); Blade length: 414 mm (16.3 inches); Maximum blade thickness: 9 mm (3/8 inch) Other uploaded materials by the same author on this same bolo plus many others can be found here: (a) Luzon weapons; (b) Visayan weapons; (c) Moro weapons; and (d) Lumad (non-Moro Mindanao) weapons |
