distinguished minister of the Methodist Church,had him educated at the best private prepara-tory schools. He entered Randolph-MaconCollege, where he pursued his studies with dis-tinction, till this institution was closed by theCivil War. Filled with patriotic zeal for the defense ofhis native State and the cause of the South, heenlisted, a mere boy, as a private in the South-side Artillery of the Confederate Army in 1863.With this command he saw active service atDrewrys Bluff, Howlett House, and otherpoints. While performing his honorable part asa soldier, he never lost sight of his future life-work. He eagerly took advantage of the kind-ness of the Army Surgeons to assist and studythe varied injuries and disease-; attendant uponarmies in conflict. He closed his armyservice with General Lee a,1 Appomattox, April9, 1865. He graduated in medicine from theMedical Department of the University of theCity of Yew York, March, 1867, having previ-ously spent one year each at the Medical Colleg
