Description
English: The nuclear-powered USN attack submarine USS Virginia (SSN-774) based in New London, CT, being escorted by an Admiralty Pilot launch on 31st August 2013 from Portsmouth Naval Base, United Kingdom after an extended visit, that began on 24 August 2013 and was scheduled to end on 29 August. The reason for the unscheduled extension to the visit has not been disclosed. The submarine's destination is unknown.

In the centre near background beyond the red channel navigation buoy and 0.6 miles from the camera is Spitbank Fort a part of the 19th century seaward defences of Portsmouth Harbour, now used as an unorthodox hotel.

Visible in the distance at far right is the resort town of Ryde, Isle of Wight and its long beaches at a distance of 4.3 miles.
