Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Luis Lagarto (1556, – 1624) Painter and illuminator of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He was born in Seville and died in Puebla. Son of Juan Lagarto de Castro, teacher of reading and writing in the city of Granada. Lagarto was a disciple of Lázaro de Velasco, in Granada. It is estimated that he arrived in New Spain around 1585, since in that year he was appointed teacher of the San Juan de Letrán school. From 1600 to 1611 he made illuminations of the capitularies of more than a hundred choir books of the Puebla cathedral. Around 1612 he returned to Mexico. Information about Lagarto's life between 1612 and 1624 -the year of his death- is practically non-existent.
