Viola da Gamba 1, Deutsches Museum
The characteristic feature of the viola da gamba are the high ribs and the bent? upper bout, the flat angled back, and the slightly arched soundboard with C- holes. It was widely used throughout Europe from the 16th century to the 18th century, and was a favorite of "gentlemen". It was particularly popular in England. Famous compositions that are considered to be the earliest chamber music pieces in their ever right were written at this time. Joachim Tielke, the most important German gamba maker, lived and worked in Hamburg. He not only built the best sounding gambas, but also the most magni- ficently decorated instruments. One of these violas stems from his circle, but is very plain in its rendering. With the advent of the viloncello, the gamba lost its importance, and many were remade as violoncello. |
