Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Village Weaver (Ploceus cucullatus) is a common and sociable bird found across sub-Saharan Africa, known for its intricate nest-building abilities and vibrant plumage. Male Village Weavers are striking with bright yellow plumage, black masks around their eyes, and a black beak. Females and non-breeding males are duller in color, often with brownish-yellow plumage. Village Weavers inhabit open woodlands, savannas, grasslands, and cultivated areas near water sources. They are often found in small to large colonies where they build their nests communally.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Village Weavers is their elaborate nest-building behavior. They construct tightly woven, flask-shaped nests made from grass, strips of leaves, and other plant fibers. These nests are often suspended from the tips of branches, providing protection from predators.

Breeding colonies of Village Weavers can be quite large, with multiple males competing for females. They are polygynous, and males attract females by displaying near their nests and performing fluttering flights to showcase their nest quality. Village Weavers are primarily seed-eaters, feeding on a variety of grass seeds and grains. During the breeding season, they also consume insects to supplement their diet and provide nutrients for their young. These birds are social and vocal, often calling loudly from their nests or while foraging. They are known to interact closely with other members of their colony, participating in communal nest-building activities.
