Summary
[edit]DescriptionVillage Hall, Skendleby - geograph.org.uk - 554217.jpg |
English: Village Hall, Skendleby The village hall runs a Playgroup.
"Skendleby probably means 'village on the beautiful slope.' ['beautiful slope' from the old English 'scene-helde' and 'village' or 'farm' from old Scandinavian 'by']. Skendleby is mentioned in the Domesday Book as 'Scheueldebi.' In medieval times this was quite a large village. In the field behind the inn are mounds and hollows that indicate some of the area occupied besides that which is lived in today along the main road through the village." |
