Description
The Freya was built in Flensburg in 1863. She appeared for the first time in the Danish ship list in 1875 with the identification NLVF (as shown by the signal flags in the painting). In the (expanded) 1883 edition she was described as belonging to E.A. Bendixen of Thisted, with captain's name stated as Petersen. When the painting was made in 1879, Arnesen was just 14, and had started the same year as a painter's apprentice.
