There are severalstreets running parallel with the river, and others crossingthem at right angles. A vast and increasing amount ofbusiness is done here every year. Excepting when theriver is frozen up, steam-boats arrive and depart daily onthe upper Ohio. Shippingsport and Portland, two villagesseparated by the canal, and about two miles below Louis-ville, are really the port of this city below the falls. Hun-dreds of steam-boat arrivals and departures occur everyyear. Before the canal was built, goods and passengersfrom the Mississippi and the lower Ohio, were landed atthese villages, and brought up to the city by land. Thiscaused an immense factory business to be done here. Butnow, all steam-boats which can run on the Ohio, may passthrough the canal ; so that boats will hereafter come up tothe Louisville wharf and receive their freights, and on theirreturn land their cargoes
