Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 1793 aquatint by an unknown artist of the fire at the parish church of St Mary the Virgin, Speldhurst, Kent.
On 20 October 1791 lightning struck the church, starting a fire that destroyed the church and melted its six bells. The church had been rebuilt in 1415 by Sir Richard Waller, of the nearby Groombridge estate, who used funds generated from the ransom of the Duke of Orleans, whom Waller had captured on the field at the Battle of Agincourt. The Duke's coat-of-arms was displayed above the south porch of the church. After the 1791 the church was rebuilt, but in such poor fashion that it was later demolished. In 1870–71 it was rebuilt again, this time to a design by George Oldrid Scott.
