Summary
[edit]DescriptionView of the Basilica of Messene on 29 October 2020.jpg |
English: “The Basilica of Messene (16 x 38 m), divided into three aisles, is entirely constructed with spolia taken from earlier buildings, as indicated by the pavement at the nave and the walls of the apse. It was first established at the end of the 7th century A.D. functioned, however, throughout the Byzantine period being steadily repaired and transformed. During the Frankish period the side aisles, which became apsidal, were used for burials. Most of the Ionic column bases are preserved in place, while several marble capitals from the baluster of the first phase are scattered around.” Text: Information panel next to the ruins. |
