Description |
Osmond Gardens (or Park), located on South Terrace, Adelaide is one of the numerous formal public gardens around the city laid out by August Pelzer, a prominent local landscape designer. The image shows the gardens under water after copious rains, possibly on 13 May 1917. A reporter wrote, 'Osmond Gardens afforded a fine sight, for a great part of it looked like a lake, and the trees and electric lights, reflected in the water, made a scene the novel beauty of which one was able to appreciate even in such unromantic circumstances.' (Register, 15 May 1917, p4). Adelaide was subject to extensive rain and gale force winds that winter, especially in July. There was considerable damage and flooding in the Hills and beach suburbs, particularly Grange. The River Torrens poured over the weir. (Mail, 21 July 1917, p7; Observer, 28 July 1917, p23). The image is dated 12 September 1917. The park is flooded. Two inches of rain in three hours (G Brooks) |
