Summary

[edit]
Author
Willem Van de Velde, the Younger
Description
English: View of a Mediterranean harbour

If this unsigned drawing is by van de Velde the Younger it would probably have been made when he visited the Mediterranean in 1694. Robinson, however, questions the attribution and suggests that the artist may be Abraham Storck.

The drawing depicts a scene of variety of shipping in a busy harbour. On the right there is a statue on a column with a ship alongside a quay on the extreme right. Between the column and this ship there is a fort in the distance with rising ground beyond. Part of what appears to be another quay is visible in the left foreground and beyond it a ship is firing a salute. A number of boats are pulling to and from this quay. Some of the moored craft in the centre foreground are lateen rigged Mediterranean types. This small panoramic drawing appears to be drawn on two sheets of paper as if from a sketchbook.
