Summary

[edit]
Description
English: View of the Snake River near the mouth of the Tucanon River (misspelled in the original caption) in Washington Territory in the United States, about 1859. During the Coeur d'Alene War of 1858, the United States Army established a temporary facility, Fort Taylor, at the mouth of the Tucanon River. The fort incorporated the basalt bluffs nearby as part of its structure. The Mullan Road, built from 1859 to 1861, used the route taken by the army from Fort Walla Walla to Fort Taylor, and established a ferry here. Gustav Sohon, artist.
