Author
British School, 19th century
Description
English: View of Greenwich Hospital from the river

An atmospheric watercolour sketch westward down Greenwich Reach, apparently from the marshy Greenwich Peninsula to the east. The church spire beyond the sailing vessel right centre is possibly St Paul's Deptford, but some licence has been taken with the topography since the whole thing seems rather rural for the apparent 19th-century date.

The same scene, loosely sketched in pencil, with rather more vessels and colour notes appears on the reverse. J. W. Carmichael, who had a similar MS hand and made similar colour notes on some of his drawings might be a possible candidate as artist, although the style is unusually loose for him.
