Description
English: View in the Graveyard, Lucknow Residency.

Photograph of the Graveyard in Lucknow from the 'Crofton Collection: Topographical and architectural views mostly in India', taken by an unknown photographer in the 1860s. Over 2000 men, women and children who died as a result of the Uprising of 1857 are buried here. The reasons behind the uprising are complicated and include a growing animosity towards the British presence in India. The result of this was the creation of a general atmosphere of distrust, shared by the British and Indians, which culminated in a year of fighting between the two. Lucknow was the site of the siege and defence of the British Residency, as the British inhabitants of the city attempted to hide within its walls and wait out the Uprising; many starved as a result..

The tomb of General Neill and others are seen at the left, Sir Henry Lawrence's tomb is at the right.
