Description

View toward the Castillo San Felipe from the India Catalina statue.

The India Catalina statue on the Avenue Venezuela at the edge of the Historic Center, Cartagena, Colombia.

This statue commemorates a native girl who was kidnapped by the Spanish at about age 8, then trained to speak Spanish. As a young adult, she returned to Colombia and neighboring lands with the Spanish to help convince the indigenous tribes that the Spanish were their friends. Some locals think India Catalina is a traitor as she sold out her fellow tribespeople for the Spanish.

No one knows how India Catalina actually looked. The statue design is an European view of what a perfect woman would resemble. January 2016
