Below a short bend of river is just visible. cH.xvii PANORAMA FROM KARA-KIR 209 of 1900 had already retained, and for whatever lay belowthem my new station offered a far better point of observa-tion. At a height of about 13,000 feet we attained the toprim of the great plateau which slopes up with broad down-like undulations from the Pisha Valley. It was a strikingcontrast to the tortuous gorges and towering walls of rockand ice we had left behind. Before losing sight of themon the almost imperceptible watershed, I turned round inthe saddle and privately registered a vow that the head-waters of the Yurung-kash were yet to see me from theeast or the south, despite all obstructive forces of natureand man. The high mountains seemed loth to let me depart; fortheir clouds kept still with us, and in pouring rain weaccomplished the long but easy descent. I
