Summary

[edit]
Description
English: View East, Chew Valley Lake From the start of the anglers' jetty at Woodford Lodge towards Denny Island.

Bristol Water’s biggest lake has a 10 mile perimeter and holds 20,000 million litres. Construction started in November 1950 and 16 farm houses, 11 houses and 2,000 acres (480 hectares) of land were bought up and drowned by the rising waters. The lake was built to provide water for Bristol. Water is pumped to the Barrow treatment works on the outskirts of Bristol which supplies much of the southern part of the city. The lake also supplies water to areas like Shepton Mallet, via the nearby Stowey Treatment works.

The reservoir is also used by anglers, birdwatchers and a sailing club.
