Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 137-160 cm; Identification: The vicuna has a tawny brown coat that is thick and woolly and white undersides; Habitat: Semiarid grasslands above 3900 m; Diet: Herbivore: grass, small plants; Reproduction: The gestation period for vicunas is 10-11 months long. The single young is weaned at ten months of age; Social Structure: Vicunas can be found in groups of 15 that are led by a territorial male. Groups may be comprised entirely of males; Behavior: Males spit at each other when they are fighting; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: A vicuna's long coat protects it from cold and snow. Humans hunt vicunas as a source of wool and meat.
