Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in May 2020: though a bit worse for the wear nowadays, the three-story brick commercial building at 654 William Street (corner Sherman Street) in Buffalo, New York still presents some sumptuous architectural details in the Victorian Romanesque style, namely round-arched windows aplenty, an odd roofline with a parapet in the center flanked by a pair of partial cornices, and decorative masonry work in various patterns. Property records indicate a construction date c. 1880, which jibes with the building's presence on the 1889 Sanborn map of Buffalo but absence in the 1872 Hopkins atlas. It appears to have always housed a combination of retail on the ground floor (including Aaron Goldberg's Furniture Store in the 1950s) and apartments in the upper floors and rear. Currently there is a convenience store occupying part of the ground floor, but the building is otherwise vacant.
