English: Field umpire Arthur A. “Doggie” Raven midway through inspecting the Victorian (VFL) football players' boots for nails protruding through their leather stops, prior to the start of an interstate match, against South Australia, at the Adelaide Oval, on Saturday, 2 July 1938. This procedure, performed here on the field, was normally performed in the rooms, and also involved checking their hands for rings and other dangerous objects. Victoria won the match by 43 points, 24.13 (157) to 16.18 (114). Ron Todd (Collingwood) kicked 9.3 (57). The Victorian Players shown here, from the left, are (a) ---, (b) ?
