Description
English: This painting shows the north side of the capital Victoria on Hong Kong Island where at this time the business district Central, named after the quay previously known as Praya Central, was located. The year is 1880. The old quay along the waterfront was later renamed Des Voeux Road and nowadays, as a result of land reclamation, runs through the centre of the business district. In the foreground on the left lies an English tea clipper flying the national flag at the back and the owner’s flag at the top. An American clipper owned by A.A. Low & Bro. can be seen on the right. In the centre of the painting a supply vessel of the English Navy with a canvas sunroof is visible. In the background on the left lies a steam cargo ship (with sails in case there was enough wind). Junks and sampans complement the painting, while the ‘Peak’, the mountain in the background on the right, is shrouded by clouds.
