1859:
This First City Clock Ordered By Architect Mountfort
For The Provincial Govt Buildings Durham St.
1860:
Arrived from England. Iron Clock Tower Assembled
In Building Courtyard.
1861:
Indecision Over Appearance & weight Of Structure On
The Wooden Tower Built For It In Durham St Led To
Its Removal To Council Yard. (Now Site of Scott
Memorial.)
Clock Mechanism Installed Inside Armagh St Stone
Tower; Unseen But Sounding Chimes.
Iron Clock Tower Deteriorates In Council Yard Until…
1897–98:
Re-Erection Upon New Stone Base At N.W. Corner Of
High & Manchester Sts, In Commemoration Of
Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.
1930–31:
Traffic Increases Cause Tower To Become A Hazard.
Decision Made To Re-erect Complete With Stone Base
On Present Site. Clock Electrified.
1977–78:
Complete Restoration – Labour & Materials
Contributed By Several City Firms Enables
Costs To Be Reduced & Chimes Installed.
