Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Victoria Barracks, Entrance Gate, Queensgate, Beverley, circa. 1940

Victoria Barracks, built between 1877 and 1878 served as the depot of the East Yorkshire Regiment and also the East Yorkshire militia. Military installations of this kind took place as part of the Cardwell reforms encouraging localisation of British Military forces. Many recruits enlisted at the barracks during its time.
During the First World War, the barracks were extended by the construction of a large hutted camp in adjacent fields which became Normandy Camp and in 1949 it was occupied by a Royal Signals Boys training unit. The camp later developed into a housing estate and the access road is now called Normandy Avenue.
Following the closure of the barracks in 1960, the Minstry of Defence disposed of the property and in 1989, a Morrisons supermarket was built on the original site. The only remaining part of the original barracks have now been converted into flats.
